He and the landscape architecture firm he founded in Brookline, Massachusetts in 1883, were also responsible for many private estates as well as national park development. The first examples were Eastern Parkway (1868) and Ocean Parkway (1874) in Brooklyn. Olmsted helped design many American urban park systems and conceived of landscaped connecting roads known as parkways. Settling at a farm and homestead on Staten Island, Olmsted served as the first superintendent of Central Park. Born in Connecticut, Olmsted was first a journalist and social commentator, whose multi-volume publications on the antebellum American South won him considerable renown. The Olmsted Center is named for pioneering landscape architect and park planner, Frederick Law Olmsted (1822-1903), who with Calvert Vaux (1824-1895), co-designed Central (1858), Prospect (1866), and Riverside Parks (1873) in New York City. The facility is the largest employer of landscape architects in any single location in the world. Today the Olmsted Center is home to the capital design and construction teams, the Map File (a repository of all park plans and maps since 1934), the NYC Parks Photo Archive, and the Flushing Meadows Corona Park administrator. Landscaping of the grounds completed in 2021 includes “rain gardens,” wetland retention areas, and a raised water channel system to distribute storm run-off. It is raised above the flood plain and its exposed steel structure complements the original administration building. In 2014, an annex designed by BKSK Architects was added to accommodate additional staff as the division expanded. Situated in a tidal flood plain, the facility has been severely damaged by several storms, and consequently, the building has been renovated to ensure flood prevention, and rebuilt sections have been elevated and upgraded for contemporary design efficiency and environmental security. In 1967, the Parks Department’s capital design and construction division relocated here, housed previously at the Arsenal, NYC Parks’ headquarters in Central Park since 1934. It was designed by the renowned architectural firm of Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, and built by Butler Manufacturing Company, a pioneer in prefabricated metal structures. Among these was the Fair’s corporate headquarters, a one-story modular building with glass curtain windows, located in the northwest corner of the park. Wagner determined what few buildings would be retained. In 1967, the 898-acre property was formally transferred from the Fair Corporation to the City and named Flushing Meadows Park (today, Flushing Meadows Corona Park.)Ī committee convened by Mayor Robert F. Upon the fair’s conclusion, many of the amenities-including pools, fountains, plantings, streets, paths, walks, utilities, benches, and toilet facilities-were retained for the park which succeeded it. Under Moses’s direction, the 1964-65 fairgrounds were designed to facilitate its eventual transition to a city park. How did this site become a park facility? Robert Moses (1888-1981), who served as NYC Parks Commissioner from 1934 to 1960, was president of the second World’s Fair. The World’s Fair of 1964-65 further advanced this long-term goal, and the currently named Olmsted Center was built to house the Fair Corporation’s administration. The New York World’s Fair of 1939-40 was used as a mechanism to clear and upgrade the land for use as a public park. This facility sits on land that was once a tidal marsh plied by Native Americans, later fished by early European settlers, and then despoiled as a vast industrial dumping ground. repositoryOpts: (Optional) Options to configure URL and authentication/authorization information for the hosting Helm repository, if any.For a local helm chart, a path can be specified instead. chart: The required chart name (for instance, "wordpress").The Release resource type’s inputs closely mirror the options supported by the Helm CLI and deviate slightly from the API supported by the Chart resources. We will cover any SQL command differences among MySQL, Oracle, SQL Server, Postgres, and other commonly used database systems.Lando has become a popular tool in the Drupal world. In this SQL tutorial series, we will learn about SQL in detail. However, in some cases, SQL commands may differ. A stored procedure is a prepared SQL code that you can save, so the code can be reused over and over again. Note: The major SQL commands are similar in all relational databases. The CREATE PROCEDURE command is used to create a stored procedure. The status of the connection Test Successfully. Specify localhost for your Hostname and enter ORCL for the SID. Socially awkward, Corky chokes on stage and his subsequent outburst toward a less than enthusiastic audience has his ailing mentor warning him to develop a better stage presence and gimmick. Corky opens the film as an aspiring magician, but lacks the charisma of his mentor Merlin. That ventriloquist, Corky, is played by Anthony Hopkins. The only problem is that his dummy is the jealous type. Written by William Goldman ( The Stepford Wives, The Princess Bride), and adapted from the novel he also wrote, Magic revolves around a ventriloquist seeking to renew a relationship with his former high school sweetheart. Released 45 years ago on November 8, 1978, Magic is an underappreciated classic and one of horror’s most unnerving love stories. The TV spot was so effective that it’s arguably scarier than the actual film it wasn’t the straightforward horror story the teaser indicated but much more a psychological thriller. The simple but terrifying ad didn’t give away much about the actual plot, but it did instill a lot of traumatic nightmares for any young viewers that happened to catch it. Imagine sitting around the TV with your family and seeing this commercial pop up on screen back in the 1970s. The phrase “they don’t make them like they used to” is thrown around a lot in the context of nostalgia, but in the case of the first teaser for Magic, it’s quite accurate. “Oh the glorious life of a creepy monster!”Ĭheck out the incredible makeup below, which came courtesy of Kelly Capoccia! “So while in this make up I had to have my grilled cheese sandwich chopped up into little pieces and I used a toothpick to eat with because my fingers were so long and sticky,” she humorously captioned one of the photos. So what did Vela-Bailey look like when the makeup team got done with her? Peeling back the curtain, the actress/stunt-woman just uploaded a couple crazy behind the scenes shots to her Instagram ( revealing Diana in all her glory. Diana cuts a chilling silhouette in the film, but most of that makeup was not actually seen on screen. The character, bathed mostly in darkness throughout much of the movie (with only her piercing eyes illuminated), was played by Alicia Vela-Bailey, who underwent an extensive makeup process in order to be transformed from beautiful actress to creepy movie monster. When you flick them back on, she’s gone as fast as she came. When you turn the lights off, she appears. Sandberg, Lights Out introduced the horror world to a potential new icon in the form of Diana, a creative villain who quite literally only exists in the darkness. Believe it or not, Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman stunt double was the same woman who played the terrifying Diana in last year’s Lights Out!ĭirected by David F. Kassovitz has made only one film before (the droll race-comedy ‘Métisse’), but ‘La Haine’ puts him right at the front of the field: this is virtuosic, on-the-edge stuff, as exciting as anything we’ve seen from the States in ages, and more thoroughly engaged with the reality it describes. They razz each other about films, cartoons, nothing in particular, but always the gun hovers over them like a death sentence, the black-and-white focal point for all the hatred they meet with, and all they can give back. Vinz hangs out with Hubert (Koundé) and Saïd (Taghmaoui). Twenty-four hours in the Paris projects: an Arab boy is critically wounded in hospital, gut-shot, and a police revolver has found its way into the hands of a young Jewish skinhead, Vinz (Cassel), who vows to even the score if his pal dies. This is a wild-eyed cross-processing of artistic, political and personal concerns, with a story that stutters, splinters and infuriates its way to an explosive finale. As their relationship begins to fray, it all goes horribly wrong. They converse in disjointed, inhumanly droll patter, duff up gas station attendants and eagerly concoct a new civilisation on a deserted beach. They head to the south of France in a hail of gunfire and Gauloises. We’re launched into the lunatic orbit of Belmondo’s Ferdinand and Anna Karina’s Marianne: Each is an impulsive, alienated, despairing soul who finds solace in the other’s desire for chaos and withdrawal. In one word: Emotions.’ His succinct and, let’s be honest, utterly hip rejoinder fluently captures what we’re about to undergo with Godard’s mischievous tenth film, ‘Pierrot le Fou’. Fuller replies: ‘Film is like a battleground. Jean-Paul Belmondo mooches up to Samuel Fuller at a party and, naturally, asks him his thoughts on cinema. In the leading role, Dutronc displays a physical frailty and stooped sadness that complements Pialat’s beautiful, poignant images. There’s no attempt to trace the origins and development of his ‘creative genius’ nor, avoiding the hazards of biopic cliché, does it seek to illuminate these dark corners of his subject’s troubled soul. However, his ill health, a brief return to the debauchery of brothels and drink, and his irrational resentment of his brother Theo’s failure to sell his work, provoke erratic swings from brooding introspection to frustrated anger. Living in Auvers-sur-Oise with his sensitive and knowledgeable patron Gachet (Sety), van Gogh (Dutronc) works quietly and steadily, meanwhile flirting with Gachet’s precocious daughter Marguerite (London). This stunningly photographed and skilfully acted film uses an accretion of naturalistic detail to present an emotionally restrained but utterly compelling account of the last three months of van Gogh’s life. □ The 101 best sex scenes in movies of all-time Written by Tom Huddleston, Geoff Andrew, Dave Calhoun, Cath Clarke, Trevor Johnston, Joshua Rothkopf, Keith Uhlich and Matthew Singer Even if you’re an espresso-sipping, chain-smoking Francophile, you’re going to find something that surprises you. To make it easier for you to take the leap, we’ve ranked the 100 best French movies ever made, from famous crowd-pleasers like Amélie to the more challenging – but no less rewarding – work of mavericks like Jean-Luc Godard and Agnès Varda. But if you continue to immerse yourself, you’ll also discover pleasures unlike those found anywhere else in world cinema. If you dive into the French film canon, you’ll encounter plenty of philosophical musings, arty embellishments and impenetrable characters. But in popular consciousness, ‘French film’ is effectively a slur – coded language for ‘pretentiousness’. Few countries can claim to have exerted such a strong influence over global cinema the New Hollywood revolution of the 1970s wouldn’t have happened without the nouvelle vague. After all, it’s where movie culture, if not moviemaking itself, began: the first commercial film screening in history occurred at the Grand Café in Paris in 1895.
